Mucuna Pruriens and L-DOPA: What 9.8 mg Means If You Take Parkinson's Medicine

Quick answer

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical bean whose seeds hold L-DOPA, the compound used in Parkinson's medicines. The HoneyBoost label prints 10 mg of seed extract at 98% L-DOPA, so 9.8 mg per gummy (10 x 0.98). A Dutch assessment could set no safe dose and flagged MAO-inhibitor and Parkinson's medicine interactions. Ask a pharmacist first.

What is mucuna pruriens, and why does L-DOPA matter?

Mucuna pruriens is a climbing tropical bean, and its seeds contain L-DOPA, the compound Parkinson's medicines are built around.

The HoneyBoost panel row reads "Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens) Seed Extract standardized to 98% L-DOPA (9.8 mg)", with 10 mg beside it (HoneyBoost label). A Dutch assessment found mucuna labels listing levodopa at 15% to 40% of the extract (RIVM 2024, mucuna risk assessment). The HoneyBoost row says 98%; no lab report is on file.

How much L-DOPA is in one HoneyBoost gummy?

One gummy holds 10 mg of mucuna extract, and at 98% that is 9.8 mg of L-DOPA (10 x 0.98).

The one study we read gave 5 g (5,000 mg) of seed powder a day for 3 months to 60 stressed, infertile men, with no placebo group (Shukla 2010, mucuna in men). The gummy's 10 mg is 0.2% of that (10/5,000), and powder differs from extract. No trial tested HoneyBoost.

Is mucuna safe with Parkinson's medicines and MAO inhibitors?

Nobody can promise that, so ask a pharmacist first: the Dutch assessment could set no safe dose.

It called the MAO-inhibitor and Parkinson's medicine interactions theoretical and advised avoiding mucuna in pregnancy, breastfeeding and with liver or kidney problems (RIVM 2024, mucuna risk assessment). The label says not to take the gummy if you take other medications. More in our medicine interactions guide.

Who should talk to a clinician first?

Anyone on regular medicine, with heart, liver or kidney disease, or pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18 should talk to a clinician first.

Tongkat ali, another row, is a possible rare cause of liver injury; dark urine, yellow skin or eyes means get care (LiverTox, tongkat ali). See who should not take HoneyBoost.

FAQ

HoneyBoost questions people ask

Does HoneyBoost contain L-DOPA?

Yes. The panel prints a mucuna seed extract standardized to 98% L-DOPA, 10 mg per gummy, or 9.8 mg of L-DOPA (10 x 0.98). L-DOPA is also used in Parkinson's medicines.

Can I take mucuna with an MAO inhibitor?

Ask a pharmacist first. The Dutch assessment called the interaction theoretical but worth a warning, with no safe dose set.

Is the 98% L-DOPA figure verified?

We cannot say. The panel prints it, but no lab report is on file and the label names no measurer.
